As I first announced here, I am a proud member of the Slow Readers Book Club. This is my review of our first book, Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls.
I couldn't possibly think of a better introductory book for the Slow Readers Book Club as Half Broke Horses. I would not have picked it up on my own and it was wonderful. These are the two ingredients that had me so excited to be a part of the club in the first place!
Walls takes you on a journey through life in the "old west," as narrated by her grandmother Lily. Within the first few pages, I had taken to the clever and unbelievably tenacious girl. As she grows into a woman, I found myself completely in awe of her strength and perseverance. Lily's life is full of twists and turns and hardships that are difficult to imagine...and through it all, I fell completely in love with this empowered woman and did not want the book to end!
The writing is honest and I actually had fun reading it (don't get me wrong, it is not all sugar coated, it is very "real"). I devoured this book and can tell you that The Glass Castle (also by Jeannette Walls) will be one of the next books that I read!
Be sure to check out the Slow Readers Book Club forum, we are in the process of choosing our next book!

I recently read this book and also loved the story. Lily was such a strong, tenacious woman. Jeanette Walls does an amazing job at telling childhood stories and making them come to life. I also recently read 1000 White Woman, another great story with a strong woman taking place on the Western Front. Happy Friday!
Sounds like a neat book! I will have to put it on my to read list.

i love the idea of a book club encouraging you to read books you would not have chosen.
The Glass Castle is AMAZING & you will love it. I try to read one book a month (at the least); but I think I need a book club to talk about my reading - it gets lonely! :)
after reading this book, i really want to read glass castle too!!
I devoured this book too! Glad you enjoyed it:D
